Mimosas look like tropical cousins to mesquite trees. Mimosas have large fronds made up of lots of tiny leaves that close up at night. Mimosas have very soft wood, and when well-watered they grow extremely quickly. Sometimes the trunk will thicken faster than the bark can grow, causing long vertical splits in the bark. The main trunk never stays upright, but always starts to bend over sideways. Each year a new set of side branches will grow upwards, only to bend under the weight of their own leaves.

During the summer mimosas grow lots of bright pink flowers. By late summer the flowers turn into bean pods, first green and then brown. The dried brown pods make a rustling noise in the wind
