Several varieties of grapes are native to Dallas-Fort Worth, including along the North Shore Trail at Lake Grapevine. Yes, that’s Lake “Grape Vine.”

Grape plants are vines. This means they like to climb on things for support. Some of these pictures show the tendrils that grow on grape vines and grab onto anything they come in contact with, even other grape vines. The last four pictures show grape vines in the process of climbing into other plants and eventually totally covering them. Since vines grow much faster than trees, the grapes tend to win these competitions and shade-kill their hosts.

Grape leaves often have notches, but not always. Grape leaves do tend to all have the same veiny texture. At each joint along the vine you will find a single leaf on one side and a tendril on the other side. At the next notch the leaf and tendril will trade sides. New branches start at the joint right next to the leaf.

If you smack a grape leaf in summer, you may stir up a cloud of tiny aphids.
