Crepe myrtles are easy to recognize. They have graceful trunks with super smooth bark. They also have flowers — white, pink, red, or bluish-purple — all through the heat of summer when everything else is plain green. In winter some people trim their crepe myrtles back to the trunk.
Crepe myrtles can grow up to 20 feet tall. They will grow lots of suckers, or new trunks, if you do not keep them trimmed back.
Crepe myrtles may be the single most common landscape plant in Dallas-Fort Worth. Look for them everywhere people have intentionally planted — yards, businesses, and street medians.
