Blackberries grow natively around Dallas-Fort Worth. The native plants have lots of small razor-like thorns all along their branches. You can purchase varieties of blackberry plants that have only a few thorns to plant in your yard. Leaves are red at first and then turn green after a few days.

Like any vine, blackberries want to climb on top of fences and other plants. But you can also find them growing in the middle of grassy fields.

Wild blackberries are edible and exactly the same as what you buy in the grocery store. The berries ripen in late spring. The sweetest berries will be those that are dark in color and swollen with juice.
